Difference Between IELTS General and Academic
The IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic Test are devised for two different purposes, depending on your future goals. The IELTS Academic Test is undertaken by those who are planning to pursue higher academic studies in English-speaking countries. Academic test focuses on subjects more suitable for professional settings, such as journals. The IELTS General Training Test is for professional settings and examines an individual’s affinity for social and work situations. The General test includes topics related to general interest, like newspapers, advertisements, and notices.
Modules
The IELTS exam pattern includes four modules: Reading, Speaking, Writing and Listening. While the Speaking and Listening modules are the same for both Academic and General Training Tests, the Reading and Writing are different.
IELTS Listening Test
The Listening section includes 40 questions distributed over four parts. Candidates are given 30 minutes to finish the entire test, with extra time provided at the end to finalise their answers. The audio recordings involve conversations, monologues, or discussions, set in either an Academic or Social concept.
IELTS Reading Test
During the Reading section, candidates are given 40 questions about three or more passages in the Academic IELTS. In the General Training IELTS, they respond to shorter texts. Candidates are allotted 60 minutes for this segment. Usually, the passages cover various topics like science, history, culture, and environmental issues.
IELTS Writing Test
In the Writing section, candidates must complete two tasks within an hour. In the Academic IELTS, Task 1 involves describing a graph, table, chart, or diagram, while Task 2 requires writing an essay about a particular content. Alternatively, for the General Training IELTS, Task 1 involves writing a letter, and Task 2 is also composing an essay on a provided topic.
IELTS Speaking Test
The Speaking section is an 11-14 minute face-to-face interview divided into three segments. Part 1 involves answering general questions about the candidate’s life, including background, interests, and experiences. Part 2 involves speaking on a topic for about 2 minutes. Lastly, Part 3 involves a deeper discussion about the topics presented in Part 2.
